BOXING BILL
U.S. Govt. Control (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, August 11. > The inter-state commerce committee of the House of Representatives yesterday approved a draft bill that would establish strict federal control over almost all big professional boxing fights—or deprive them of valuable in-1 come from radio and tele ! vision coverage. The bill is a result of thei one-minute world heavyweight championship fight be-i tween Cassius Clay and Sonny; Liston last May. The outcome focussed sharp i criticism on American boxing | practices in general and gave fresh impetus to drives to! eliminate any behind-the-! scenes criminal deals. Under the draft bill. President Johnson would establish a three-man federal boxing commission with authority to grant or refuse licences for radio and television transmission of fights. The commission would have to ascertain that contracts or agreements, for a fight were not contrary to the best interests of either professional boxing or of the public. It would have the right to forbid radio and television coverage of any fight that was suspected of involving collusion, racketeering or bribery.
