“Average Family”
Sir, —I deplore the fact that vou permitted the grossly misleading advertisement entitled “Happiness?” to appear in today’s newspaper. Insofar as it presented a distortion of the existing state of affairs, it was a lie, which, by Christian standards, is a sin. How can the persons responsible for the article justify such hypocrisy? How can you. sir. justify your action in publishing such material? I find it difficult to escape the view that your action was an abuse of the responsibility of your oosition, for an editor should be accustomed to discerning what is true from what is false. That you either failed to detect the erroneous assumptions in the article or chose to ignore them, is reprehensible. To my mind you have lowered the standard of “The Pr-ss.”—Yours, etc., michael a. McCarthy. August 5, 1965. Sir.—Yesterday you published an advertisement by the Christchurch Revival Centre, professing the merits of their religion. The portrait of the “average family” was outrageous, and an insult to the people of Christchurch. Since when have Christchurch television viewers had a selection of programmes at one time? Religion has a role in our daily lives but surely not as a commercial.—Yours, etc., AVERAGE SCHOOLBOY. August 5, 1965.
