PAY IN SCRIP

Move To Curb Black Market IN.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SAIGON, July 22. American troops in Vietnam are to be paid in scrip instead of dollars in an attempt to crush a thriving black market in American currency, informed sources said today. The scrip will also be issued to Australian soldiers stationed in Vietnam. The scrip has been used by American troops in Asia before. It was first used after World War II during the occupation of Japan and is still in circulation there and in Korea. In South Vietnam, the scrip would be usable only at military establishments such as post offices and clubs. The move was requested by the Vietnamese Government as a block to the flow of black market dollars, officially estimated at 40 million dollars a year.
