STARLINGS ' SHRIEK

Record Wanted For Orchard (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter! MELBOURNE A man wants 1000 starlings —alive and shrieking. He is Mr Lionel Jager, a senior field officer with the Victorian Department of Agriculture, who has been working for three years on methods of discouraging starlings from cherry orchards. Starlings are blamed for eating 20 per cent of the Victorian cherry crop before it is picked. Mr Jager said that he had tried strong smells, carbide scare guns, crackers, flashing mirrors, and chemicals. “Their own shriek of warning is the only thing that does the trick,” he said. “But the shriek varies from district to district.” Mr Jager plans to record the shrieks on a specially developed unit and use the noises to scare the birds away.
