“The Press” In 1865
July 25 COAST DEVELOPMENT. —The news from the West Coast continues to be of a most promising character, and a mail seldom arrives without bringing an account of some fresh discoveries. The latest accounts are of a rush having taken place to the Grey, where, although the reported find seems to have been somewhat exaggerated, it is certain that a considerable and very rich field has been opened up. . . . Our is to impress on our readers that the West Coast is not a mere El Dorado created for the special advantage of the
wise men of the East, and that, justly anxious as the public are that the road thither should be pushed on as fast as possible, the object of the road is not solely to allow them to get quicker at the gold, nor will their duties to the West Coast be at end when the road is completed. The goldfields have raised, or will very shortly raise Canterbury to the foremost position among the provinces of the Middle Island but it will need a broad and liberal feeling on the part of the Government and the public at large to allow it to reap to the very fullest extent the advantages thus placed within its reach.
