LORD MOUNTBATTEN RETIRES.—Admiral of the Fleet Earl Mountbatten of Burma, who has retired as Chief of Britain’s Defence Staff, leaving the Ministry of Defence in London for the last time. He is shaking hands with his successor, Field-Marshal Sir Richard Hull. Lord Mountbatten, who is 65, has served in the Royal Navy since 1913, when he enrolled as a cadet.
