KICKING DUEL

Victory On Penalties

SUBURBS 17: P. Carlsen a try; M Douglas four penalties

and a conversion. SHIRLEY U: K. Erickson a try; M. Richards three penalties

Nine penalties were kicked in this game at Sumner before Erickson, a replacement for the second five-eighths, F. Fowier, scored in the corner for Shirley: this occurred well into the second half. It was almost on time when P. Carlsen, the Suburbs centre three-quarters, scored.

These were both good tries. The half-back, D. Frampton, made the break for Shirley’s try and it was W. Cottrell, playing at second five-eighths, who found the gap for Carlsen. The difference between the teams was probably In the better kicking opportunities that came the way of Suburbs. Both full-backs kicked very well indeed. Richards kicked one penalty of 50 yards from just short of half-way.

Suburbs had the better backline. L. Davis threw fast, if not always accurate, passes and VV. Cottrell was a constant threat at Second five-eighths. The Suburbs three-quarters, Carlsen, L. Cottrell, and D. Reeve, were determined attackers.

Shirley also ran with the ball as much as possible, but not as purposefully as did Suburbs. Too seldom did the ball reach the three-quarters. ft. King, Who began the game on the wing and then moved to the centre, made one scintillating run but lost contact with the man outside him.

Forward piay was even and rigorous. Line-outs were particularly messy with much inconclusive play and too much ineffectual batting of the bail. O'Malley and E. Mullany im parted plenty of vigour to the close play tor Suburbs. For Shirley, E. Veal played well in the tight, while B. Gosney and C. McNicoll roved effectively. Referee: Mr A. G. Duekmanton.
