Reading Standards
Sir,—ln previous letters reference has been made to the lack of funds available for primary school equipment. One wonders if the little money allocated to school committees could perhaps be put to better use than purchasing equipment, such as cooking stoves and dishwashers, or providing hot school lunches for children in a prosperous community. Would this money not have been better spent on reading material? When are the New Zealand education authorities going to realise the growing public dissatisfaction with the present system where the average primary school teacher is “Jack of all trades and master of none”?—Yours, etc., SPECIALIST. July 1, 1965.
