Reading Standards
Sir, —Forty years ago all the subjects listed by “Assistant Master” were taught to a mixed class of 75 pupils at Te Aro School, Wellington, by Mr W. Binet Brown, of happy memory. In addition, he taught us lessons in honour, courtesy, fair play, ethics, and civics, and gave practical help to any pupil who showed special talent, or to a slow learner. There was a weekly after-school class in Latin for any pupils interested, In my year, fewer than 10 failed their proficiency examination, and of these, several gained competency or endorsed competency. What, therefore, makes teaching such a problem and a chore today?—Yours, etc., KAKE TONU TE ARO. July 1, 1965.
