Adoption Of Thai Child
Sir, —Mr Shand’s refusal of a permit for a workingman to adopt a baby girl from Thailand is unnecessary, and the advice of the child welfare authorities can only be based on prejudice. Bringing a two-year-old from an Asian orphanage to a New Zealand home should present great environmental advantages, not “serious difficulties.” The refusal is particularly regettable from the point of view of international and inter-racial relations. The immigration of adult Asians could present difficulties arising from language and cultural background, but the generous offer to make a home for a little child is an opportunity not to be thrown away.—Yours, VARIAN J. WILSON.
