Air Pollution

Sir, —Christchurch becomes smoggier with each passing winter, and I would suggest

that by the winter of 1966 or 1967 we could experience real health trouble. Already this correspondent has been absent from Work owing to respiratory troubles, and these troubles have occurred regularly for the last four winters with the first few fogs of the season. I believe the health authorities should “clamp down” on all open fire-places between mid-May and mid September each year, as well as making tar-produc-ing hearth coals illegal at any time of the year. Your readers should ask themselves if they have suffered any disorders of the. upper respiratory areas about early May each year. If so, they should approach their local member of Parliament or other appropriate authorities to see what can be done—before it is too late.—Yours, etc., THICKER EVERY YEAR. July 4, 1965.
