Buller Fanning
Sir, —At a Federated Farmers meeting near Westport, Mr J. J. F. Hughes, consulting officer for the Dairy Board, as guest speaker, considered that, with adequate drainage and topdressing, farms in the Buller district would produce butterfat on a level per acre with Taranaki. Experiments on our pakihi lands were also mentioned at the meeting, but only those of the Department of Agriculture. Some private farmers’ efforts would appear to be giving more promising results. I am sure that if the Minister of Agriculture realised what impetus an inspection by him could give to this work, he would endeavour to visit the district in the near future. Perhaps the member for Buller, who has access to the Minister, will realise the importance of such a visit and persuade him of its desirability.—Yours, etc., MORE PRODUCTION. July 3, 1965.
