POLICY CHANGE

(N.Z. Preu Attn.—Copyright) PERTH, July 2. The next Federal conference of the Australian Labour Party will be asked to consider a new plank in its Federal platform which could revolutionise the Party’s policy on immigration and delete all reference to the words “White Australia.” The newly-worded policy recommendation has been adopted by the State executive of the Western Australian branch of the party and is supported by State secretary, Mr F. E. Chamberlain. If the recommendation is accepted, there will no longer be any mention of the Asian quota system, which the Party rejects under its present platform. Another section of the present platform, saying that policy shall be directed to maintaining the basic British characteristics of the Australian nation by a proportion of not less than 60 per cent British to not more than 40 per cent non-British. would also be deleted. It would lead to fundamental changes in the Labour Party's immigration policy. Mr Chamberlain would not go into details of what the recommended new policy would mean.
