Vesper Boat Club fUnited States), gave an aweinspiring performance at Henlev Roval Regatta yesterday when it set a course record in the Grand Challenge Cup for eights. No crew in the history of the regatta—first held in 1839 —has ever covered the traditional course of one mile 550 vards so fast. Vesper, from Philadelphia, which had four of its Tokyo void medallists in the boat clocked 6tnin 18sec to beat Harvard University bv twothirds of a length, in the first round. The previous record in the Grand Challenge Cup—premier event at the regatta—was the 6min 23sec achieved by the Soviet crew. Z.ialghitis Vilinjus. when they won last year. Harvard, which has the reputation of being , the fastestever American university crew, was also inside the old mark. There was never more than half a length between the two crews until 50 metres from the finish.
