LONDON, July 2.
The 1965 Wimbledon singles final will have the same four players as the 1964 finals —a repeat performance that last happened 72 years ago.
Tins year, as last, the Australians, R. Emerson and F. Stolle, will play for the men’s championship, and Miss M. Smith, of Australia, and Miss M. E. Bueno, of Brazil, will contest the women’s title. In 1892 and 1893, Miss Lottie Dod was the women’s winner. W. Baddeley won the men's title in 1892 but lost it to J. Pim the following tear. AU the players were British.
In yesterday’s women’s semi-finals, Miss Bueno beat the little, bespectacled Arne-
rican, Miss B. J. Moffitt, 6-4, 5- 6-3. Miss Smith, after a shaky start, finally outplayed Miss C. C. Truman (Britain), 64, 6Truman Leads, 2-0 Miss Smith double-faulted three times in her first service game and went down 0-2, The 14.000 centre court crowd, sensing yet another upset win by Miss Truman, roared their approval. But Miss Smith broke back with three big service returns, held service to love, broke again, and held again for 4-2. She was showing tremendous speed around the court but was still a bit cautious with her shots. She missed three backhand volleys in the eighth game to let Miss Truman break back and level at 44. It was then that Miss Smith struck her top form as she shook off the last signs of nervousness.
In Complete Command Miss Truman’s hopes vanished as the powerful Australian reeled off the next eight games for the match.
Miss Smith was so much in command in the last three games that the British girl could scrounge only three paints.
Miss Bueno had to struggle to beat Miss Moffitt. She started brilliantly to lead 5-1 in the first set, but then had to scramble to win it, 64. The American took the initiative from the reigning champion at 2-2 in the second set, and went to 5-2, but Miss Bueno got back into the set with some powerful service returns.
At 5-5 she had two points to break through Miss Moffitt’s service, but then she fell heavily going for a wide return and bruised her arm
and knee. She lost this game and dropped service to give Miss Moffitt the set. The deciding set saw Miss Bueno get the upper hand, although Miss Moffitt saved four match points in the last game. Emerson Favourite For today’s men’s singles final, Emerson is heavily tinned to beat Stolle and retain his title. Both men are exponents of the big serve-volley game, but the wiry Emerson has much greater mobility and flexibility than the lanky Stolle. Stolle gained his first major title last month in the French chamoionships. without meeting Emerson. It has given him a great fillip, but there have been only eight cases in the last 40 years of the French title-holder going on to win at Wimbledon.
