Qualifying Rounds <N Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, July 2. Bruce Devlin, of Australia, has made an unhappy start to his bid for this year’s £lO.OOO British Open golf championship. The 27-year-old Devlin, who. at 12/1. is Australia's main hope for the coveted title, flew into London from America yesterday, only to go down with an attack of tonsilitis. He has had to delay his journev to Royal Birkdale, near Southport, where this year’s open will be played, on July 7, 8 and 9. Fortunately for Devlin he is among 51 leading players, including the American giants, Jack Nicklaus. Arnold Palmer and the title-holder, Tony Lerna, and the New Zealander, R. J. Charles, who are exempted from the 36-hole qualifying tests at the neighbouring Hillside and Southoort and Ainsdale courses today and Saturday.
