CLASSROOM DESTROYED

Fire In School At Hastings (N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, June 20. Fire destroyed one classroom, damaged two others, and severely damaged the central administration block of Hastings Central School early yesterday. At the height of the blaze it seemed likely that much of the 27-year-old wooden block would be destroyed as predawn darkness exaggerated the effects and extent of flame and smoke. Mr P L. Page, secretarymanager of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, said one classroom would have to be replaced. “The extent of damage to the central administration block and to two classrooms has yet to be assessed, but it seems as if they will be repaired.” he said. At the height of the blaze, the Hastings Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. G. Harlen) was severely injured when he fell into the smoke-filled boiler room.

He was admitted to hospital where his condition is satisfactory.
