Steel Company Has More Land

AUCKLAND, June 21.

The New Zealand Steel Company has now purchased almost all the land it requires for the present and long-term needs of a New Zealand iron and steel industry.

Sir Woolf Fisher, chairman of the company, arranged for the purchase of six more farms in the Glenbrook area today, bringing the total of land bought there in the last week to over 800 acres.

He was accompanied by Ministry of Works officials on a visit to Waiuku for negotiations and to Glenbrook, about four miles north of the town, t<h see the individual farms.

In similar negotiations last week four other farmers agreed to sell their properties.

Sir Woolf Fisher said tonight the steel company was interested in one more farm, whose owner was overseas.

“We will be having talks on his return,” said Sir Woolf Fisher.

The owners of the properties had been “most co-opera-tive” throughout the negotiations. “I feel we have been able to complete the purchases on a basis satisfactory to all parties,” he said. Most of the farmers had indicated they would be buying new properties, but some would lease back for a period farms not needed yet by the company.

Sir Woolf Fisher, said civil engineering design work was under way and as soon as it was complete site development could start. He expected this would be in October or November.
