“SHOWROOM ON RAILS”

South Island Tour

A novel piece of railways rolling stock—a “showroom on rails” is touring the South Island.

A national manufacturer of floor coverings, furniture and bedding chartered a mail van from the railways, and transformed it into a rolling showroom. By skilful display techniques, samples of almost the entire contents of an average furnishing store have been telescoped into the 60 feet by six feet van. Every inch of wall space has been used to include more than 50 samples of carpets, three ranges of vinyl tiles, samples of foam plastic, bedding, furniture and shoes.

The exterior of the carriage has been decorated with black and orange trimmings, and show-wood battens along the sides. When the decorators had finished their work railways officials were hardly able to recognise their own mail van.

The “showroom on rails” will travel the length of the South Island, stopping at the provincial centres. Retailers in these centres will be able to invite their customers to look over the showroom which they will sell from as though it were their own shop.
