HOSPITAL CONTROL

Integration Urged

The early transfer of control of mental hospitals to hospital boards is sought by the Canterbury division of the British Medical Association in a remit to the council of the New Zealand branch of the association. says the “New Zealand Medical Association" newssheet.

The remit reads: — “That the council encourage the Health Department to implement its declared policy of handing over control of all public therapeutic services to hospital boards. In particular, mental hospital services should be integrated with general hospital services.” The division also wants a standing committee to undertake annual studies of general practitioners’ economics and fees and to make recommendations as the need arises. A third remit suggests that the executive of the council write to all hospital staff chairmen asking them to find out, from the by-laws of their controlling hospital board, whether the staff is entitled to hold full and unrestricted medical staff meetings, and whether the staff chairman has direct access as of right to the appropriate hospital board committees.
