Rare Hybrid Wins Prize At Cage-bird Show

A rare greenfinch-chaffinch hybrid was on show for the first time in many years at this year’s Christchurch Canary and Cage Bird Club show in the Durham street Art Gallery. The five-month-old male bird, exhibited by a local breeder. Mrs A, A. Slade, won its class, which was listed under any British hybrid. Mrs Slade has owned birds for 30 years and has been entering shows for 14 years. She said she had been trying to rear this hybrid for several years, but this was the first time she had achieved success. She also bred the parents, and thinks that was the key to her success, as aviarybred birds mate more successfully than wild ones in captivity. The show attracted 950 entries from Auckland to Dunedin. The show manager (Mr P. T. Watkinson) said that in spite of fogs closing airports, most of the birds had been flown in on time. Several birds had arrived on the only freight plane to land at Christchurch. The judge of the border and gloster canaries (Mr H. F. Cresswell) said that some of the birds in the border champion section were the best he had seen for some time. The glosters are a relatively new breed, and only eight were on show. They have crested heads which look like Beatle hair styles and give them a rather comical appearance.

The judge of the novice borders (Mr W. A. Matthews) said the standard was not as good as in previous years, mainly because the cold spell had affected the birds. Mr P. J. Collins, who judged the foreign section, said he was amazed at the number of entries and at the high standard they had reached. Other judges were generally pleased with the standard of birds before them.
