Two Morning Tea Breaks
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, June 4. Two morning tea breaks for girl typists who work with a tape recorder instead of from a shorthand notebook, are suggested by researchers for the National Institute of Industrial Psychology. They also recommend that when these “audio typists” take the breaks they should relax and read magazines. Working with a machine in-
stead of a boss puts an added strain on them. Another trouble—Venetian blinds can mesmerise them and over-work makes them giddy. The institute has been investigating work conditions of audio-typists in British tax offices.
Mr Cyril Plant, general secretary of the Inland Revenue Staff Federation, says the institute will also check on whether wearing ear-phones all day is bad for a girl’s health.
The institute’s research programme began last year and will end this October. The cost, £l5OO, will be borne jointly by a government research department and the Inland Revenue Staff Federation. The Board of Inland Revenue is fully supporting the research. It will not recruit any new shorthand typists. Audio typists are increasing monthly among the 6000 girls working in income-tax typing pools.
