Reluctant To Return
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, June 4. The only two men ever to step outside a space vehicle in orbit were so struck by the experience that neither wanted to return to his capsule. The American astronaut, Major Edward White, yesterday remained outside the confines of gravity and his Gemini spacecraft for 20 minutes, almost double the planned time for the “walk.” “I’m not coming in,” he | laughingly replied to insistent pleas from his fellow astronaut, Major James McDivitt. McDivitt had to order White in several times before he re-entered the ship. On March 27, the Russian cosmonaut, Alexi Leonov, the world’s first man to “walk" in space, later told a Moscow television audience he enjoyed his stroll so much he refused to return to his ship when ordered. I “I’m very glad now that I I did so, and did not obey the I commander,” he said.
