35-Hour Week
Sir, While appreciating the remarks by the president of the Public Service Association in advocating the reduction of the working week to 35 hours, we must be realistic and face the facts before any strong pressure is put upon the Government in this direction. Vacancies still far outnumber the people to do the work in New Zealand, which is helping to keep our cost of living very high. The introduction of a 35-hour week at this stage would only aggravate the position and spiral the inflationary tendencies still further. One must remember that we cannot run hospitals and other essential services, including the production of our primary produce, on a 40-hour five-day week basis economically. If we had a population of 10 or 12 million it might be quite a different story, but to press for a 35-hour working week with only 2] million people in the country, is not realistic.—Yours, etc., F.W.P.F.
