Test Umpire Protest
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
GEORGETOWN, April 13. A protest from the British Guiana Umpires Association hangs over the West Indies board of control when it resumes its meeting this morning in Georgetown.
The Umpires’ Association met late yesterday to register a protest against the board’s decision to import an umpire from outside British Guiana.
The umpire is Mr Cortez Jordan, from Barbados, who will stand in the third test with the British Guiana umpire. Mr Cecil Kippins
Mr Jordan, the only umpire ever to no-ball the West Indian fast bowler. C. Griffith, for throwing, confirmed he had been granted leave from his public service job to fly to Georgetown to officiate in the test.
The umpires’ association threatens to withdraw Mr Kippins from the test, because it feels the appointment of Mr Jordan has slighted British Guiana umpires.
But opinion in Georgetown last night was that Mr Kippins. having been appointed to the test, would probably go through with his assignment irrespective of any in-
struction from the local association.
The Australian captain, R. B. Simpson, has denied he asked for the appointment of an umpire from “outside British Guiana.”
The Guiana “Graphic” claimed yesterday: “It is understood that the request for an umpire from outside of British Guiana was made by the Australians."
Simpson said: “The report is entirely wrong. We made no request about umpires.” The West Indian allrounder, A. White, strained his right arm at team training yesterday and there is a some doubt if he will be fit to play.
THE CANTERBURY water polo team to plaj’ New Zealand Universities on Easter Mondav is I. Mclntosh (captain), B. Monk, H. Sellout, L. Scott, M. Scott, J. Parker, P. Sturge. R Pirie, and J. Turpin.
