Licensing Hours
Sir,—l have read with some concern that Mr . Holyoake is looking into the question of extending licensing hours for hotels. This is surely not what is required. An extension of hours would only lead to more drinking instead of civilised drinking. For years electorates have been given the opportunity of voting for extended hours, and understandably the vote has been against such a measure. In my opinion drinking hours should be adjusted to meet the needs
of our social pattern. We do not want the pubs open in the morning. Our main need is for them to be open at night, when the majority have finished work. Whatever other times pubs are open, they should at least be open between the hours of 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. There is then no excuse for those who must drink every day, to be drinking during working hours.—Yours, etc.,
HOUSEWIFE. April 13, 1965.
