‘Ridiculous’ Policy On Oyster Exports
It was ridiculous to have oyster Ixtals tied up or on limits when the export of oysters could bring much-needed overseas exchange to New Zealand, said Mr M. L. Newman, managing-director of P. Feron and Son Ltd^.yesterday. Mr Newman has just returned from an overseas business trip.
Mr Newman said oysters overseas sold for 8s to 15s a dozen and sometimes double that. Yet only one per cent of New Zealand’s oyster catch could be exported. “If present Government policy on oysters had applied to the export of crayfish, the country would not be earning exchange of £1 million every year. There should be free exports of oysters.” he said.
“It is time our Government grew up and started to think in terms of the nation's welfare, instead of being concerned about getting votes from people who are not in a
position to appreciate the true value of oysters to the country,” said Mr Newman. “In a case like this. It is the Government’s duty to educate the people as to the economic facts and. in particular, to the benefits from extra overseas purchasing which will accrue from allowing these exports.”
Mr Newman said that while it was true the Government was doing all in its power to expand the fishing industry, it would have to take a sophisticated and mature attitude to the marketing of fisheries’ products.
