MERCANTILE WINS
League Side Collapses
The annual cricket match between the Suburban Mercantile and Otago League associations at Barrington Park resulted in a win for Mercantile by 38 runs. Mercantile. batting first, made a good score of 194 on a soft wicket and slow outfield. D. Watson was the main scorer with 64 and J. Boddy (37) also batted well. J. Williams and E. Legge each claimed four wickets
Otago League was not at all comfortable against the Mercantile slow bowlers, E. Marriott being the best with a forceful 38, and the side was all out for 102. C. Bromley, three, and R. Cotton, six, shared the wickets.
With a lead of 92, Mercantile scored 81 for one before declaring its second innings. These runs were attained in 12 overs. T. Tanner, scoring 52 not out, hit three 6’s and six 4’s.
This left the League side 173 for victory and with 115 on the board and three wickets down a good finish looked likely. But the arrival of G. Williams into the attack brought a sudden change and the last seven wickets fell for 20 runs. Williams, in four overs, had the outstanding figures of five for 12.
Mercantile finally won by 38 runs with 15 minutes to spare. Mercantile 194 (Watson 64 Boddy 37, McGuigan 25, Malloek 21, Tanner 12. Rollason 10 not out; J. Williams four for 49 Legge four for 55) and 81 for one declared (Tanner 52 not out, Rollason 14 not out) beat Otago League 102 (Marriott 38; R. Cotton six for 26, Bromley three for 36) and 135 (Williams 55, Marriott 27; G. Williams five for 12).
