West-University Tops Averages
B. F. Hastings not only headed the local club aggregates for the third successive season—the first to do so since W. A. Hadlee in the early war years—blit established a fielding record. Hastings, the West-University captain, took 21 catches in the season, by far eclipsing Hadlee’s nine-year-old record of 16.
J. W. Kiddey (Riccarton) took the most wickets, but P. A. Sharp (West-University) headed the averages. His team-mate, A. C. Timpson, also returned fine figures and
Lancaster Park had three players, B. C. Irving, B. Andrews and A. G. Duckmanton, in the top six places. There was an interesting tussle among the wicketkeepers and, in the end, I. P. Anderson, with 30 dismissals, finished one ahead of S C. Guillen and R. K. Allen, with K. N. Priest only two mare behind.
K. Thomson, who finished third in the averages, had six scores over 50 and, with 393 runs, was the leading scorer after Christchurch.
The leading averages are:—
