F.A.O. AID TO PERU

Development Of Fisheries “Peru in 15 years has gone from nothing to 9,000,000 tons to top the world,” said the Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) describing the growth of Peru’s fishing industry when he was speaking on Monday at the opening of the second national demonstration of Japanese fishing equipment and techniques at Timaru. The Minister did not say how Peru did this, but Mr M. L. Newman, the managing director of P. Feron and Son, Ltd., heard the subject discussed at a fishing conference in Rome late last year. Mr Newman said yesterday that Peru made use of the United Nations Special Fund, which also gives assistance for the development of fisheries. The assistance came from the fisheries division of the Food and Agriculture Organisation. The F.A.0., said Mr Newman, had assessed Peru’s fishery resources, so that the industry knew what fish it had, and where, at the start of the venture. It helped in developing methods and techniques both at sea and ashore and in the exploitation of resources.

Most important, F.A.O. gave assistance and advice in instituting necessary conservation measures.

Mr Newman said that New Zealand, because it was a member of F.A.0., could take advantage of this assistance. “I sincerely hope the Government is going to do this,” he said.
