Obituary
MR M. L. HOLDEN (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Feb. 16. Mr Mervyn Letter Holden, of Gisborne, one of the few civilian recipients of the George Medal, died today. He was 65. His George Medal award was in recognition of his rescue of a member of the R.N.Z.A.F., Flying-Officer D. J. Nilsson, from a burning aircraft after it had crashed and caught fire on his Pouawa property. Mr Holden extricated the pilot from the cockpit, in spite of severe burns to the face, arms and hands. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters.
