Assaulted Captain

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. Feb. 16. The second officer of the m.v. Moananui, William McCulloch Kay, aged 42, pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting the captain yesterday and was fined £5, by Mr J. D. Murray, S.M., today. Senior-Sergeant R. M. Schwass said that at 2 p.m. Kay staggered on to the bridge of the ship and asked the master, John William Leggett, why he had been paid off.

When told, he rushed at Leggett ripping his white shirt and tie. The first officer came to the master’s assistance.

Kay had been dismissed for failing to report for duty at 8 a.m. He was found in the crew’s quarters at noon. The captain alleged Kay was under the influence of liquor.

Mr H. J. Ross, who appeared for Kay. said there had been “bad blood” and a clash of personalities between the two men since Kay joined the ship a week ago.
