Stablemates May Run At Manawatu Meeting

The Riccarton trainer, J. C. Tomkinson, may campaign Hushaway and Standout at the Manawatu autumn meeting after they race at Trentham next month.

Both horses were placed on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting. They did not race on the second day, but should return to Trentham right at their best for engagements at the Wellington autumn meeting, which, this year, is a three-day fixture. Hushaway won the Thompson Handicap at Trentham last autumn.

He is essentially a top-of-the-ground galloper and unless he is taken on for the Manawatu meeting he might have few opportunities this season before the arrival of the winter tracks. FRESHENED

Royal Bid. winner of the Wellington Racing Club Handicap and the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Midsummer Handicap in successive starts recently, has freshened well in the last week or so.

V. D. Clutterbuck will now prepare him for the staying races at the Wellington autumn meeting. Yesterday the brilliant Southland-owned chestnut ran half a mile on the plough in 52 2-ssec. He was ridden by his regular rider, F. H. Skelton, and was accompanied by Canadiana (Mrs V. Clutterbuck). The stablemates sprinted the final three furlongs in 39 4-ssec, and could have quick, ened with ease. Mrs Clutterbuck will have a horse carrying her own colours later this season. She has leased the Hiawatha gelding, Tracey’s Comet, from Mr G. Chang, of Otematata.

Tracey’s Comet won once, was twice second, and once third last season, but he has done nothing of any account this season. WESTPORT TRIAL Horses engaged at Westport provided most of the fast work at Riccarton yesterday. Llanstar shaped well for a hack in beating the open class performers Zinder and General Gilbert over seven furlongs. Llanstar. ridden by A. H. Eastwood, finished a length in advance of Zinder (Moir) and General Gilbert (Swanson) was half a length back third.

Llanstar recorded Imin 31 l-ssec for the distance and 50sec for the last half-mile. He should be a force in the hack events at Westport. Donna Gola (F. H. Skelton) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 31 4-ssec, the last four in 51sec, the final three in 38 l-ssec.

Summer Lad (McGuire) ran six furlongs in Imin 18 4-ssec, the last four in 52 2-ssec.

The apprentice. P. Daly will ride Summer Lad at Westport. Walhalla (C. McDonald) and Golden Cassock (J. Savill) sprinted half a mile under good weights in 50sec, the final three furlongs in 36 4-ssec.

Danny Kaye (Edens) was going easily on the outside and just ahead of Hamadan (Collins) and Play Fairer (Stechmann) after running half a mile in 50 3-ssec, The stablemates. Mushtara (Bailey) and Mister Bud (F.

H. Skelton), also recorded 50 3-ssec.

M. J. Wadley plans to start Mister Bud on the second day at Westport, followed, perhaps, by a campaign at Trentham.

Approval (F. H. Skelton) ran his half mile in 50 2-ssec, and the final three in 37 3-5 sec. He has done most of his racing as a sprinter, but will be tried at a mile and a quarter at Westport on Saturday. The stablemates, Even Chance (Collins) and Alten Fiord (McGuire), ran six furlongs, the last four in 51 sec, on the trial grass. P. H. Jones will take them to Westport for engagements in the maiden races on Saturday. D. N. Hadfield Will ride them both at Westport. Even Chance will probably run in the second Trial Stakes, and is unlikely to oppose his stablemate in the Trial Stakes No. 1.
