Facts Of War
Sir, —T. M. . Shaw writes what everyone knows: that “war is horrible.” The vita) factor is that the two world wars have proved that war is now futile and completely ineffective and useless as a means of settling disputes; these will in future be decided by the already existing strong and effective economic and financial measures. The worthy and practical alternatives suggested by your other correspondent, Clifford Brown, would provide a better method of insurance against war than military preparation. If another major war eventuated between the great Powers one result would be inevitable—there would not be one brick left on another
in Europe. Anyone who fondly imagines that soldiers Can defend him or save him from communism should be led away for medical attention. —Yours, etc., RETURNED SOLDIER, 1914-18. February 16, 1965.
