Long Jump Prospect

The announcement that the long jump is to be included in the women's track and field test between New Zealand and New South Wales next month has enhanced Wellington’s chances of getting a representative in the team. A 17-year-old, Miss J. Wilkins, has had a brief but outstanding career and could possibly edge out Canterbury’s Miss L. Curtis, the Dominion’s last representative in the long jump.

After achieving more than 17ft at the age of 15, as well as winning the open .women’s pentathlon, she has placed some spectacular performances on record this season. She started off with near 18ft jumps, crashed through the 18ft barrier in December and in January added 3in to Mrs J. Heeps’s centre record with 18ft sjin. Later came

a wind assisted 19ft 9jin followed by the defeat of Miss Curtis with a jump of 19ft in an inter-centre meeting.
