messing about in boats
Inevitable It has been inevitable for years that at the Pleasant Point club—with the tide streaming in, a light wind and a large fleet—someone will be caught against the bridge and capsized. It happened on Sunday to A. W. Shields’s R class dinghy. While manoeuvring near the bridge the boat’s spinnaker boom snagged a pile. Swept by the tide, the boat went under the bridge while the 20ft mast and sail were held at the bridge deck. After passing between the piles the boat disappeared up-river. Towing failed, so a wet and bedraggled crew walked the boat on its side back under the bridge to the club. Delightful G. S. Mander is always Interested in sailing other types of racing yachts. The latest, on Sunday at the Sullivan Cup event, was A. J. Lance’s Harrisondesigned Australian Moth, Research. After the race he said: “These are a delightful little boat.” However, false floors are out for him; he much prefers a conventional cockpit with higher side decks.
