Diploma In Criminology
Sir, —The recently announced course for a diploma in criminology appears to be available only to prison officers, who would seem to require accomplishments other than the academic. Surely a post-graduate course of this nature would be more attractive to detectives, probation officers, chaplains, and lawyers. Already there is a post-graduate diploma in clinical psychology available only to employees of the Health Department, and is, in effect, under the patronage of one officer in that service. Can the University Grants Committee justify this growing tendency to provide academic qualifications which are not available to all? Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON.
February 9, 1965. [The chairman of the University Grants Committee (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) replies: “The University of Auckland has instituted this course to cater for the needs of police and prison officers and probation and welfare officers. Nevertheless, entry to the course is not restricted to such people.”]
