(N.Z. Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 5.
About 5000 Ratana Maoris from all parts of New Zealand are expected to make a pilgrimage to their sacred and historic waterfall on Mount Egmont during Easter weekend in April.
A 15-acre “mushroom village” of tents and caravans is being planned at the Opunake marae to house the gathering. The head of the Ratana Established Church, Mrs Puhi-o-Aotea Ratahi, her senior minister. Sir Eruera Tirikatene, M.P. for Southern Maori, and the other Maori members of Parliament are expected to attend.
The occasion was prophesied 40 yecrs ago by the church's founder, Mr T. W. Ratana, who predicted that the Opunake marae would be "overrun by people" on this date.
A spokesman for the organisers said today the occasion was classed as a Ratana Youth Club convention, but the visitors would include people of all ages. The visit would be an “historic and spiritual event” as the pilgrimage to the sacred waterfall at South Egmont was something that was handed down from generation to generation.
