National Bowls 13 REMAIN IN SINGLES
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, January’ 5.
Playing in a national tournament for the first time, H. O. Andrews, of Okato, Taranaki, is one of the two two-lifers left in the national singles bowling championship at the end of the second day of play in Auckland today.
Andrews and G. H. Jolly, of Leith, are the only unbeaten players. Jolly, who is a national bowling councillor, is one of two South Island players remaining.
Eleven players remain with one life each, including the other South Islander, H. Deavoll, of Sydenham, Most of the big names were eliminated today: S. Parlane (Khandallah), in the last round of the day to A. Connew (Carton), J. Morris (Hamilton), also in the tenth round, and J. H. Rabone (Auckland), twice a winner of this title, in the ninth round. O’NEILL DEFEATED W. P. O’Neill (Carlton), the runner-up to Rabone in 1961, was eliminated in the eighth round by his club-mate, W. R. Fleming, jun. R. L. McDonald (Onehunga) went out in his first match of the day and A. Govorko (Te Puke) was eliminated in the following round. There were plenty of tales of woe. F. Coleman (Carlton), a retired beadmaster, appeared to have little show of retaining his last life when he trailed 1-16 in the late stages of his match against H. Wootton (Pukekohe). FIVE SUCCESSIVE 3’S However, Coleman retaliated with a string of five three’s to level, and went on to win, 22-16.
Morris, the 1958 Empire Games representative, had to play an extra end against F. McLaren (Onehunga) before being eliminated. McLaren led, 15-7, after 15 ends, saw his lead whittled away and finally won the extra end on a measure.
H. R. Buchan (Tui Park), the defending champion, lost a life to D. G. Emirali (Sandringham) in the seventh round, but won his remaining three games, two of these on the last head.
A sporting gesture by W. H. Hampton (Naenae) allowed Morris to win his eighth round games. Hampton led, 21-20, on the twentieth end only seconds
before the bell was due to ring tor the time limit. Hurried Measure
Hampton hurriedly measured the head and threw the Jack up to allow another to be played. Had he stalled he would have been assured of victory. He lost the game through'thta gesture as Morris registered two points on the last head for a 22 21 win.
The two-lifers are:—H. O. Andrews (Okato), G. H. Jolly (Leith).
