Otago Drought Critical

(N.Z. Press Association)

DUNEDIN, Jan. 5.

The position of farmers in drought-stricken North Otago is “really critical,” a Department of Agriculture official in Oamaru, Mr J. G. Richards, said today. “High temperatures and no rain over the Christmas period have sheared off pastures completely. There is just no growth,” he said. Farmers would be faced with a major pasture renewal problem now as most grasses were dead or dying and must be replaced. It would take two or three years, he said and would cost a good deal.
