African Migration
Sir, “Suspicious” questioned your report of the exodus of Africans from their homelands. You selected the Consul-General for South Africa and published comment from him. He said 20,000 Africans from other countries infiltrate yearly into South Africa to share in its “unparalleled prosperity, excellent labour conditions, and social services.” Africans do enter South Africa, at-
tracted by wages higher than they have previously received. But this is only one fraction of the story. A Christian consultation held at the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation, in Zambia, “recognising the social and economic evils in the migrant labour system,” made recommendations to churches on how to help victims of misrepresentation, and to reduce this migration into South Africa. The World Council of Churches is planning how to give more assistance to the half-million refugees in Africa, including those who have fled from South Africa. —Yours, etc., DAVID M. TAYLOR, (The Rev.). December 26 ,964.
