INDECENT ASSAULT
Young Man Sentenced (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 25. Barry Charles Freer, aged 22, clerk, of Mount Roskill, was placed on probation for two years when he appeared before Mr F. McCarthy, S.M., yesterday for sentence on three charges of indecently assaulting boys under the age of 16 years. The Magistrate refused to continue suppression of Freer’s name. “These offences are too serious to suppress your name,” he said. Freer had previously pleaded guilty to all the charges which were committed while he was employed as a circulation inspector by a Sunday newspaper. Freer appeared yesterday after being remanded to Oakley Mental Hospital for observation under section 37 of the Mental Health Act. The Magistrate said he would impose a suspended sentence to enable Freer to carry on with the treatment he is at present undergoing. “But I would like the Court to keep some control over you,” Freer was told. Special conditions of the probation are that Freer is to live and work as directed, he is to undergo psychiatric treatment as directed, and he is to pay £l5 toward the cost of the prosecution.
