BUILDING DAMAGED
Early Morning Blaze Several business premises in Haywoods Building, at the corner .of Manchester and Tuam streets, were burnt out soon after 2 a.m. on Thursday morning. Eight units from city fire stations attended the blaze, and some of the firemen had to use breathing apparatus. The firemen confined the blaze to the fourth floor, where it is believed the fire may have started near some rubbish boxes. The Christchurch Photographic Society’s newly renovated studio was burnt out, and the office of B. K. Morton Proprietary Ltd., foundry suppliers, was gutted.
New suits valued at several hundred pounds were damaged in the premises of Superior Fashions Ltd., and there was some damage in the premises of J. McMillan and Company, Ltd., leather goods manufacturers. The chief fire officer to the Metropolitan Fire Board (Mr L. R. Osmond) paid tribute to the firemen who contained the stubborn blaze.
