N.Z CHRISTMAS TREE

Flowers, Greenery Used

Christmas at the height of summer means gardens full of flowers. So the Christmas tree could be a floral one, a New Zealand Christmas tree. Use an urn or goblet-shaped vase as the base. Cut a cone of the plastic foam used by florists and shape it at the bottom to fit inside the vase. The tree of leaves and flowers is built on the cone. Soak the cone thoroughly first, and fill the vase with water so that it stays moist. Arrange small leafy branches round the cone, first placing one at the top to establish the height, and onp at each side to give the width. Suit their proportions to the size of the base and the place where the tree is to go in the room. Work evenly round the cone, completely covering it with greenery. Then stud it with flower heads mounted on florist’s wire. Choose flowers which will stay fresh, such as daisies, carnations, marigolds, summer chrysanthemums, hollyhock blossoms or lilies. Keep the largest blooms for the base, and turn the arrangement as you work so all views will be equally attractive.

All flowers and greenery should be prepared before use by thorough soaking. Spent blooms can readily be replaced to keep the tree fresh till Twelfth Night.— From the Department of University Extension, Otago.
