IRISH LUCKY AT TENNANT CREEK
(,VZ. Press Association— Copyright) TENNANT CREEK (Northern Territory),
December 21.
A big Irish miner, Bill McKeown, is setting a hot pace for the Tennant Creek bachelors in the race for the holiday girl, Diane McNiece.
Diane and Bill doing the town arm-in-arm is a sight as familiar as a dust storm in the tiny Territory mining town.
“Bill gave up three shifts for me last week and he’s swapped the day shift with another chap today so that we can go out together again,” Diane said today.
On Friday Bill packed Diane, his bagpipes, and several mates into his station sedan for a 100-mile trip to the Frewena road-house. They swam in the roadhouse pool, ate giant steaks and drank beer.
Cattle station people came from hundreds of miles around to take photographs of Diane and get her autograph.
Christmas Dinner
Yesterday they went swimming again in the station water-hole seven miles outside the town; last night Diane and Bill attended the “late late show” at the local lodge. Bill now has a firm date with Diane for Christmas dinner at Mike O’Connor’s Tennant Creek pub.
“This is the most wonderful holiday a girl could have,” Diane said.
“The people here are going out of their way to take me everywhere and show me everything. I’m sure that when the time comes I won’t want to leave.”
