UNIVERSITY SALARIES

Govt. Action Urged

The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) would have to give top priority to study of the rates of pay for the academic staff of New Zealand universities, said the principal of Lincoln College (Dr. M. M. Burns) after new rates of pay for the staffs of Australian universities had been read to a meeting of the college council.

The emigration across the Tasman of some of New Zealand’s best brains had been increasing, and the new salary scales at Australian universites would not help to slow it, said Dr. Burns. Instead of asking the Prime Minister to look into the wage scales in New Zealand, it might be better to ask him to ban the export of New Zea land's best brains, suggested a member of the council.
