Dunk, Legrange Tie In Dramatic Finish

' (New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, December 8. The South African, C. Legrange, and an Australian, E. W. Dunk, tied dramatically in the Watties £l5OO golf tournament which ended at Hastings yesterday. In third place, one stroke behind, was another Australian, J. Sullivan.

Dunk led the field at lunch when he was one stroke ahead of Sullivan and two ahead of Legrange. When he shot a fourth round of 69, he looked a certain outright winner. But Sullivan came to the eighteenth needing a four to tie. He was faced with an Bft putt to share first money, but it lipped the cup. Eagle to Tie Legrange, playing in the last trio with E. A. Ball and W. Gale, was still two strokes behind Dunk going to the par five seventeenth. He hit only an ordinary drive, and his second, a four wood, clipped the top of a bunker and rolled on to the green. But he sank a 20footer for an eagle three. So he also went to the last wanting a four for the tie with Dunk. He was just off the edge of the green for two, chipped sft past the pin and coolly sank the putt. Godfrey Fourth The rules governing the tournament provided for a “sudden death” play-off in the event of a tie, but the sponsor, Mr J. Wattie, offered to boost the second prize of £225 to £3OO to put it level With the first prize and avoid the play-off. The New Zealand professional W. J. Godfrey, second

equal after three rounds, shot a moderate 72 this afternoon for a total of 278, which gave him fourth place. Sharing the 279 position were P. Tuohy (Australia) and the New Zealand amateur champion, S. G. Jones. K. D. G. Nagle, the outstanding competitor on the New Zealand circuit, finished with a total of 281 which put him in eighth place. He was never the potent force in this tournament that he has been elsewhere in the series. Leaders were: ("Denotes amateurs) 274 E. W. Dunk (Aust), 68, 69, 68, 69; C. LeGrange (S.
