Trials To Assist Golf Selectors
A system of trials for players nominated by clubs has been inaugurated by the Canterbury Golf Association to assist the selectors ' (Messrs C. J. Ward and S. G. H. Rich) in choosing the team to compete in the Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament next year. Previously, players were selected on form shown in tournaments. Clubs will be asked to nominate players, on a handicap of three or less, who would be willing to take part in the trials. The first trial, which would probably be in February, would consist of 72 holes of stroke play. The leading 12 would then play a further four rounds of seeded match play before Easter in which players would receive one point for a win and half a point for a draw. A team of eight would probably be chosen for the South Island inter-provincial tournament at Invercargill on March 6 and 7 after the first trial, the secretary of the association (Mr G. W. Green) said yesterday.
Mr Green emphasised that the trials would be only a guide for the selectors. It would be a chance for them to see the top players all playing together. Originally, the idea had been that the leading six in the trials would be in the Rose Bowl team. Stroke Titles The Canterbury stroke championships, which were abandoned last season because of poor entries, will be held this season in conjunction with the Russley club’s 72-hole tournament on March 27 and 28—subject to the approval of the Russley club.
The following dates and venues of Canterbury tournaments, subject to the acceptance of the club’s concerned, were approved:— Foursomes, Christchurch and Waimairi, May 1 and 2; junior, Templeton, May 22; amateur, Russley, October 23, 24 and 25; CanterburyWellington match, Templeton, May 2. Mr R. Hope was appointed manager of the under 21 team to compete in a tournament at Balmacewen in February.
