5. Africa Heavily Beaten, Innings And 104 Runs

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—-Copyright) DURBAN, December 8. England beat South Africa by an innings and 104 runs in the first cricket test of their five-match series at Durban today. Final scores: England 485 for five declared, South Africa 155 and 226.

South Africa, resuming at 122 for three, was 189 for eight at lunch, the England off-spinners, F. J. Titmus and D. A. Allen again dominating play. The end came soon after the interval, for the addition of 37 runs. Pithey Dismissed South Africa’s only real hope of saving the match vanished soon after play was resumed today when A. J. Pithey was dismissed for the addition of a single to the overnight total. Pithey and K. C. Bland had yesterday come to South Africa’s rescue after the Springboks had followed on 330 runs behind and had lost three wickets for 28. They had added 96 runs in an unbeaten partnership at the close. This morning, Pithey lofted the final ball of Alien’s opening over towards the mid-on boundary where E. R. Dexter held the catch. Then at 142, Bland played

forward to Titmus, got an outside edge, and was taken in the leg trap. Bland batted 139 minutes for his 68, hitting three sixes an four fours. J. D. Lindsay, after batting defensively for 26 minutes, was out for 10 when he played forward to Titmus and was caught by Dexter at silly mid-off. In the next over from Allen, R. A. McLean stretched down the pitch to a slower ball and popped up an easy catch to M. J. K. Smith at forward short leg. With the total 177, J. S. Price came on with the new ball in place of Titmus, who today had bowled 17 overs, including eight maidens, and taken two for 13. Allen, whose figures this morning read 17, 3, 32, 2, was replaced by Thomson. Change Brought Reward The, bowling change brought its reward 15 minutes before lunch when D. Varnels was caught behind playing forward to Thomson. England separated the ninth wicket pair when M. A. Seymour, playing back to Titmus. was completely deceived and bowled. One run later J. T. Partridge was run out, leaving England an overwhelming winner. ENGLAND First Innings 485 for five dec. SOUTH AFRICA First Innings T. L. Goddard, c Smith, b Price 8 E. J, Barlow, b Thomson .. 2 A. J.
