ANTIQUES LOST

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 8. Valuable antiques, including a statue more than 250 years old, were destroyed by fire which extensively damaged the living room of a Bluff house on Friday night. No estimate of the loss incurred by the owner of the house, Bruce Lowe, could be made yesterday. The fire was first noticed soon after 10 p.m. by a passing taxi-driver who radioed

his base to call the fire brigade. Mr Lowe and his family were at the pictures. When the brigade arrived the living room was well alight. Firemen said only the fact that the roughcast house was constructed of fire resistant material saved it from total destruction. Mr Lowe said the house and furniture were insured but many irreplaceable antiques had been lost. The cause of the fire was not known.
